busterblog - BREAKING: Retired Police Officers Storm Abuja in Protest Over Unpaid Pensions — Active Officers Attempt to Block Them

Tensions flared in the heart of Abuja today as retired Nigerian police officers took to the streets to protest the non-payment of their pensions, a long-standing grievance that has left many of them struggling to survive after decades of service to the nation.

The peaceful demonstration quickly gained public attention—not just because of the cause, but because serving police officers attempted to stop the protest, ironically silencing a cry for justice that affects them too.

The retirees, many of whom looked visibly frail and weary, gathered at strategic government locations, carrying placards with messages such as "We served with our lives, don’t let us die in hunger", and "Pay us our pensions now!".

According to eyewitnesses, several of the elderly men and women had traveled from various states, despite health concerns, to make their voices heard.

Shockingly, instead of offering solidarity, some on-duty police officers were seen barricading roads, dispersing crowds, and attempting to halt the protest.

This move has sparked outrage among citizens and social commentators who believe the actions of the active officers were not only shameful but short-sighted, considering they too will one day retire into the same pension structure—or lack thereof.

A retired officer at the scene, simply identified as Sergeant Musa, expressed his frustration:

“I gave this country 35 years of my life. I faced robbers, kidnappers, and dangerous assignments. Now, they tell me I’m on my own? And instead of helping us, my junior colleagues are trying to drive us away. They’re only hurting their future.”

Despite the attempts to quash the protest, many of the retirees stood their ground, chanting and demanding to speak with representatives from the Pension Commission (PENCOM) and the National Assembly.

The issue of unpaid pensions for retired police officers has been a recurring crisis, with many accusing the Nigerian government of neglecting those who risked their lives daily to maintain national security. Several past assurances by authorities have failed to produce lasting results.

Social media has since erupted with mixed reactions. While some support the retirees, others question the moral compass of the serving officers who enforced the dispersal.

Calls are now mounting for President Bola Tinubu’s administration to step in and resolve the matter swiftly. With inflation soaring and the cost of living increasing daily, retired officers say they are tired of surviving on borrowed time and borrowed food.
