busterblog - Spotify Data Shows 800,000+ Gospel Playlists Added Over Three Easter Seasons: A Global Spiritual Surge

Fresh insights from Spotify have unveiled a remarkable global trend in gospel music, with more than 800,000 gospel playlists created worldwide across the last three Easter weekends.

This surge underscores the profound connection listeners have with gospel music during this significant Christian season, as highlighted in a recent report by Vanessa Obioha.

The data reveals that Sub-Saharan Africa played a pivotal role, contributing over 70,000 of these playlists, a testament to the region's deep cultural and spiritual ties to worship music, alongside its increasing adoption of digital streaming platforms during Easter.

Globally, artists like Maverick City Music, Elevation Worship, and Hillsong Worship have dominated gospel charts, with tracks such as Jireh and Firm Foundation (He Won’t) maintaining strong streaming numbers for three consecutive Easters.

These songs, often recorded live, resonate with audiences due to their emotional depth and ability to replicate the energy and intimacy of a church service, offering listeners a powerful spiritual experience.

This global appetite for gospel music reflects its universal appeal as both a source of reflection and a celebratory soundtrack during Easter.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, local gospel groups have also made a significant impact. South African ensembles like Joyous Celebration and Spirit of Praise have solidified their place as favorites, earning spots among the top 10 most-streamed gospel tracks during the Easter season.

Their songs, including Ndenzel’ Uncedo Hymn 377 (Live) and Wenzile (Live) by Joyous Celebration, as well as Thath’Indawo (Live) by Spirit of Praise, capture the communal essence of African church gatherings.

Known for their innovative arrangements and exceptional vocal performances, these groups have successfully bridged traditional and contemporary gospel styles, resonating with audiences across cultural and geographical boundaries.

The rise of playlist culture has further transformed how gospel music is consumed in the region. Over the past three years, more than 70,000 gospel-themed playlists have been created in countries like Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa, according to Spotify’s findings.

This growing trend has made gospel music more accessible, allowing listeners to curate personalized and communal experiences that align with their spiritual journeys.

Popular playlists such as Praise and Worship have become go-to options for many, reflecting the genre’s adaptability in the digital age.

As gospel music continues to evolve, its role as a unifying force during Easter remains undeniable, blending tradition with modern listening habits.
