In a major policy shift that is already stirring heated reactions, the Federal Government has announced a new pricing regime for Nigerian passports, set to take effect from September 1st, 2025.
According to the update, the cost of a 32-page passport with 5 years validity will now be ₦100,000, while a 64-page passport with 10 years validity will cost a staggering ₦200,000.
The announcement comes as part of a broader effort, authorities say, to standardize Nigeria’s passport costs with international benchmarks while ensuring better security features and faster processing.
However, the news has sparked immediate backlash among citizens, especially at a time when Nigerians are grappling with inflation and economic hardship. Social media has already lit up with thousands of comments, with many calling the hike “unrealistic” and “a punishment for ordinary people trying to travel.”
Critics argue that the new rates place international mobility further out of reach for average Nigerians, while others say the government should have focused more on reducing processing delays, fixing corruption at passport offices, and eliminating middlemen before implementing such a steep increase.
Meanwhile, officials have defended the decision, insisting that the adjustment will improve the quality of services, discourage racketeering, and align Nigeria with global standards, where passports often cost more but offer seamless processing and digital efficiency.
As the countdown to September 1st begins, Nigerians now face a new reality: the cost of owning the green passport has officially doubled, transforming one of the most essential travel documents into what many are calling a luxury item for the privileged few.
