In a no-holds-barred statement that has reignited tensions in Rivers State’s political arena, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed that he never asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to suspend Governor Siminalayi Fubara—instead, he wanted the governor impeached outright.
The bombshell came during a recent media chat where Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and current political heavyweight, expressed his frustration over the ongoing crisis in the state.
He accused Fubara of betraying political agreements and warned that his actions could destabilize the PDP and governance in the region if left unchecked.
“Let the truth be told—I didn’t ask the president to suspend him. That’s too light. I told them clearly, if he can’t be controlled and he’s violating the Constitution, then he should be impeached. Period.”
Wike’s blunt admission confirms what had long been suspected in political circles: that the rift between the once-allied leaders has now exploded into full-blown war.
Sources close to the political drama say the feud stems from power struggles and unmet agreements regarding appointments, loyalty, and control of the Rivers political structure.
Fubara, once Wike’s hand-picked successor, has reportedly taken an independent stance since assuming office—something Wike has described as “ingratitude” and “political rebellion.”
While Governor Fubara has maintained a calm public stance, his allies suggest that efforts to sideline or intimidate his administration are ongoing—including moves to disrupt state functions and isolate him from national influence.
Wike’s latest comments have sparked outrage and concern online, with many Nigerians questioning why a serving minister would openly advocate for the impeachment of a sitting governor.
“Is Wike trying to run Rivers from Abuja?”
“This isn’t politics anymore—it’s desperation.”
As the political crisis deepens, all eyes are now on President Tinubu, who has so far treaded carefully in handling the Rivers conflict. But with Wike’s latest public admission, the pressure to intervene decisively is mounting.
Whether impeachment efforts will be renewed or met with fierce resistance remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Rivers politics just got even messier—and Wike isn’t hiding his hands anymore.
