Panic broke out in the Eleyele area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Tuesday afternoon after a fully loaded petroleum tanker carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS)—popularly known as petrol—tumbled along a major route, triggering fears of a potential explosion.
According to eyewitness reports, the tanker lost control around the sharp bend close to the Eleyele roundabout and overturned, spilling a large quantity of its highly flammable content across the road. Emergency responders, including men of the Oyo State Fire Service and officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), swiftly arrived at the scene to cordon off the area and prevent a possible fire disaster.
A crowd quickly gathered, with some residents and passersby seen attempting to scoop the spilled petrol despite warnings from security personnel on the ground. Authorities have since urged the public to vacate the scene for their own safety, citing the extreme risk of combustion.
As of press time, no lives have been reported lost, but traffic in the area has been heavily disrupted. Commuters have been advised to avoid the Eleyele axis entirely and seek alternative routes as tanker evacuation efforts are underway.
This incident adds to the growing list of petroleum-related accidents in Nigeria, where poorly maintained roads, aging tanker fleets, and weak regulatory enforcement continue to threaten lives and property. Just last month, a similar incident in Ogun State claimed multiple lives and destroyed several vehicles after a petrol-laden truck exploded following a crash.
Residents are calling on the Oyo State Government and federal safety agencies to enforce stricter regulations for petroleum transport vehicles and prioritize road safety measures in densely populated areas like Eleyele, which serve as vital corridors to both residential and commercial parts of Ibadan.
Emergency teams remain on high alert to prevent any ignition while investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
