JUST IN: FG Approves ₦712.26 Billion Overhaul of Lagos Airport Terminal One in Landmark Aviation Project

busterblog - JUST IN: FG Approves ₦712.26 Billion Overhaul of Lagos Airport Terminal One in Landmark Aviation Project

In a monumental decision that signals a new era for Nigeria’s aviation sector, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has officially approved a staggering ₦712.26 billion for the complete rehabilitation and modernization of Terminal One at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

Announced on Thursday following a high-level meeting chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, the project is spearheaded by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and is poised to be the flagship initiative in a broader ₦900 billion aviation overhaul.

According to Keyamo, the ambitious upgrade has been awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and involves the complete dismantling of the current Terminal One down to its core structural framework. From there, a full-scale rebuild will incorporate modern mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, transforming the aging facility into a state-of-the-art international hub.

As part of the broader Lagos aviation transformation, the expansion of Terminal Two was also sanctioned. This includes the construction of a new aircraft apron, access roads, bridges, and other supporting infrastructure — all aimed at easing congestion and increasing capacity.

In total, when the Terminal One rehabilitation and associated Lagos airport projects are combined, the capital investment hits ₦712.26 billion, making it one of Nigeria’s largest aviation investments in history.

But the plans don’t stop at structural upgrades alone.

The FEC has also greenlit a ₦49.9 billion security project to construct a 14.6-kilometer steel perimeter fence around the airport — a move designed to drastically enhance airport security. The fence will be outfitted with:

Intrusion detection systems

CCTV surveillance cameras

Solar-powered floodlights

A dedicated patrol road

At the heart of this security revamp will be an advanced command and control center, engineered to detect and respond to unauthorized movements near the airport boundary in real-time.

“Anyone or anything close to the fence will be detected immediately, and the location pinpointed,” Keyamo assured, highlighting the government's commitment to international safety standards and operational excellence.

The airport’s rehabilitation is a strategic move as Lagos remains Nigeria’s busiest gateway and West Africa’s most vital air traffic node. The project is expected to boost tourism, enhance investor confidence, and redefine Nigeria’s global aviation image.

With the Tinubu administration positioning infrastructure development as a central pillar of its agenda, this announcement is not just about bricks and mortar — it’s a bold statement of intent.
