Federal Capital Territory (FCT) workers have broken their silence in a wave of frustration and disappointment, openly criticizing the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, for what they describe as consistent delays in salary payments since he assumed office.
In a blunt statement attributed to several FCTA (Federal Capital Territory Administration) staff members, the workers accused Wike of making their lives harder rather than improving them:
“Wike is not a blessing to us, rather, he’s a disaster to those of us staff in the FCT here. We receive our salaries on the 5th or 6th day of the following month after.”
The statement has sparked widespread discussion among civil servants and Abuja residents, with many expressing concern that the morale within the FCTA is rapidly declining due to the financial strain caused by these repeated delays.
Before Wike’s appointment, salaries in the FCTA were typically paid on or before the end of each month.
However, since the former Rivers State governor took over the reins, workers say that tradition has crumbled — and with little to no explanation from the minister or his administration.
The sharp criticism contrasts with the strongman image Wike has tried to project in the FCT, taking on unauthorized buildings and land racketeering.
But for FCTA staff who face rent, bills, and school fees, these populist projects offer little comfort when salaries arrive almost a week late.
One staff member, who pleaded anonymity, lamented:
“How can someone who was once a governor and knows how civil service works be this insensitive to workers' welfare? Is this the reward for our loyalty and silence?”
The backlash comes at a time when inflation is biting hard across Nigeria, and the cost of living in Abuja is soaring.
Many fear that continued delays could lead to industrial action or quiet rebellion within the civil service ranks.
As of now, Minister Wike has not responded publicly to the allegations. But with the hashtag #WikePayFCTStaff beginning to trend and murmurs of protest brewing, pressure is mounting for the FCT Minister to address the growing dissatisfaction head-on.
