The football world has been plunged into deep mourning as Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Silva, have both tragically lost their lives in a fatal car crash in Spain.
The devastating accident occurred on Thursday, July 3, 2025, along the A-52 highway near Zamora province, in the northwest of Spain.
According to Spanish police and multiple verified sources including The Guardian and TalkSport, the vehicle carrying the two brothers veered off the road near Cernadilla, caught fire, and was engulfed in flames before emergency responders could intervene. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
Diogo Jota, aged 28, had become a household name in world football through his incredible journey from Paços de Ferreira to Wolverhampton Wanderers and ultimately to Liverpool FC, where he became a key part of Jurgen Kloppâs squad.
Since joining the Reds in 2020, Jota made over 180 appearances, scoring 65 goals and playing a vital role in Liverpoolâs domestic and European campaigns.
His younger brother, AndrĂ© Filipe Teixeira da Silva, aged 25, was a midfielder for F.C. Penafiel, a respected club in Portugalâs second division.
Though less known internationally, André was celebrated for his discipline and promising career path. His sudden passing has left his teammates and fans devastated.
The Portuguese Prime Minister, LuĂs Montenegro, described the news as a âdevastating national tragedy,â calling Jota âone of Portugalâs most brilliant footballing ambassadors.â The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has also declared a moment of silence before all national and club games this weekend in honour of the brothers.
Liverpool FC released a heart-wrenching statement:
âWe are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our beloved player Diogo Jota and his brother AndrĂ©. Our thoughts are with their family during this unimaginably difficult time. Diogo will always be a part of the Liverpool family.â
Clubs around the world have begun paying tributes, including former club Wolverhampton Wanderers, Benfica, FC Porto, and dozens of players from the Premier League and beyond. Fans gathered outside Anfield to light candles, lay flowers, and sing "You'll Never Walk Alone" in memory of the fallen star.
Jota was also a vital player for the Portuguese national team, earning 49 caps and playing a crucial role in their UEFA Nations League success. His energy, technical brilliance, and humility made him one of the most respected players of his generation.
As tributes pour in from around the globe, one thing is clearâthe world has lost not just talented athletes, but two humble, dedicated brothers who lived for football and family.
