What began as an outpouring of grief over the tragic death of rising music star Mohbad has now spiraled into a storm of accusations, street protests, and social media fury — with Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo finding herself at the heart of the firestorm.
Over the past 48 hours, protesters have taken to the streets in Lagos and parts of Ogun State, brandishing placards and chanting slogans that directly accuse Iyabo Ojo of manipulating the narrative surrounding Mohbad’s controversial death. In scenes that are now going viral, angry youths could be seen confronting police officers and vowing not to back down until “everyone using Mohbad’s name for clout or cover is exposed.”
The situation escalated after fresh audio clips and screenshots surfaced online, allegedly showing private exchanges and voice notes involving figures close to the late singer’s family. Many protesters now claim that certain celebrities — Iyabo Ojo included — are attempting to “rewrite the truth” or divert attention from the people actually responsible for Mohbad’s pain and ultimate demise.
For many, the tipping point was a widely circulated video in which Iyabo Ojo defended her past involvement in the case, insisting that she had only sought justice for Mohbad and never attempted to shield anyone. But that explanation has not been enough for some Nigerians, who see her as too cozy with suspects, too present in the media, and too eager to be the spokesperson of a cause they believe should belong to the people.
One protester shouted through a megaphone during a rally in Ikeja:
> “We love Iyabo Ojo, but she must not use Mohbad to clean anybody’s image. This matter is bigger than content creation or social media. We want real justice!”
The protests come amid growing demands for transparency from the Lagos State Police Command, which is yet to release a full and conclusive autopsy report — despite earlier promises. The prolonged silence has only fueled conspiracy theories, with Mohbad’s fans — popularly called “Imole Soldiers” — now convinced that something is being hidden.
Social media has also become a battlefield. While some Nigerians still back Iyabo Ojo, praising her for being one of the first celebrities to demand answers after Mohbad’s death, others accuse her of turning tragedy into a PR campaign. Hashtags like #JusticeForMohbad and #IyaboOjoExplain are trending simultaneously, showing just how divided the public has become.
Iyabo, for her part, has issued a statement saying she remains committed to justice and has no regrets about her involvement. But critics aren’t convinced. Some are now calling for her to step back entirely from the case to allow “neutral and legal processes” to take over.
Legal analysts warn that the protests, if not managed, could turn violent. “This issue has moved beyond celebrity involvement,” one said. “It’s now about public trust, and every new revelation — whether true or not — is feeding the flames.”
Mohbad’s death in 2023 was shocking enough — a 27-year-old artist silenced under suspicious circumstances, just as he was breaking into mainstream stardom. But nearly a year later, the wounds remain wide open, and the battle for justice is no longer only in courtrooms — it’s in the streets, on Twitter, on Instagram Lives, and on protest banners across Lagos.
For Iyabo Ojo, the coming days will be defining. Will she continue to fight for her truth? Or step away to let the storm pass? Either way, one fact is clear — the Mohbad saga is far from over, and the streets are watching.
