Musa Kida Dedicates D’Tigress’ Historic AfroBasket Victory to President Tinubu, Sparking Mixed Reactions

The President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Musa Kida, has publicly dedicated the D’Tigress’ record-breaking AfroBasket title to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a move that has quickly become a flashpoint in the country’s ongoing debate over politics in sports.

Kida’s dedication came in the wake of D’Tigress' dominant 78–64 win over Mali in the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket final, marking their fifth consecutive championship and extending their unbeaten run in the tournament to 28 games—a feat unmatched in the competition’s history.

“This win is for Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose leadership has rekindled hope in Nigerian sports,” Kida said during a post-match press conference, adding that the administration’s recent support played a significant role in the team’s preparation and motivation.

While the dedication was lauded by some as a diplomatic nod to federal backing, Nigerians online were quick to dissect the gesture—and not everyone was impressed. Within hours, the dedication trended on X (formerly Twitter), where many Nigerians criticized what they called “political hijacking” of the team’s hard-earned glory.

"Una go still owe them salary. But dedication to president full ground," one user posted sarcastically. Another added, “D’Tigress dey win with their sweat, but politicians dey rush to take credit.”

The reaction reflects a growing skepticism in Nigeria where athletes’ achievements are often used for political optics, despite recurring issues of underfunding, unpaid allowances, and administrative chaos. The D’Tigress themselves have, in the past, voiced concerns over delayed payments and inadequate support—even after previous title wins.

Still, the dedication fits into a broader trend. In recent months, President Tinubu’s administration has increased public praise and monetary rewards for successful athletes. After the Super Falcons’ historic WAFCON victory, each player received $100,000 in bonuses, a move seen by many as part of the administration’s renewed push to invest in sports and youth development.

Analysts say Kida’s move could be a strategic alignment, possibly aimed at ensuring future federal support for the embattled basketball federation, which has faced internal conflicts and international sanctions threats in the past.

But sports analysts also warn that symbolism cannot replace structure. “Dedicating a title to the president may buy political goodwill, but unless systemic funding, transparency, and athlete welfare improve, Nigerian sports will remain a fragile miracle,” said sports journalist Yemi Daramola.

Amid the political buzz, one thing remains undisputed: the D’Tigress have once again proven their mettle on the court. Led by coach Rena Wakama, the team has become a model of consistency and excellence—despite the drama that too often surrounds Nigerian sports.

In a nation hungry for good news, their victory offered a moment of unity and joy. Whether or not that joy can translate into lasting change behind the scenes is a different game entirely.
