In a stunning show of appreciation for excellence, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a monumental reward package for Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title triumph.

Each player of the victorious team will receive a whopping $100,000, a brand-new apartment, and the National Honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON)—a rare gesture that has sent waves of excitement across the sporting community.

Additionally, every member of the coaching crew will be awarded $50,000, marking one of the most generous state-backed rewards in recent Nigerian sports history.

This surprise announcement comes barely 48 hours after D’Tigress outclassed Mali 78-64 in a dominant AfroBasket final performance, sealing their place in history with an unprecedented 28-game unbeaten streak dating back to 2015. Coach Rena Wakama, who also led the team to the 2023 title, has now become the first woman to win back-to-back African championships as head coach.

President Tinubu, who made the announcement during a reception held at Aso Rock this evening, hailed the team as “symbols of excellence, resilience, and national pride.”

> “These young women have lifted our spirits, carried the Nigerian flag with honor, and reminded the world that Naija no dey carry last,” Tinubu declared, drawing thunderous applause from guests, including sports administrators, diplomats, and lawmakers.

The reward package is being seen as part of the administration’s broader effort to reposition Nigerian sports as a tool for international diplomacy, youth empowerment, and national unity.

Social media has since erupted with mixed reactions. While many Nigerians praised the move as long overdue recognition for women’s sports, others questioned whether the same level of investment and urgency is being applied to sectors like education and healthcare. Nonetheless, the players themselves were visibly emotional, with several expressing gratitude for what they described as a life-changing gesture.

MVP Amy Okonkwo, who scored 19 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in the final, said, “This means everything. For years we’ve fought without acknowledgment. Today, Nigeria has shown us we matter.”

As the nation continues to bask in the glory of D’Tigress’ achievement, the President’s reward is being interpreted not just as a celebration of excellence, but as a symbol of hope in a country yearning for good news.
