Akwa Ibom Suspends Village Head Over Alleged Sponsorship of Vandalism and Intimidation at New Community Market

busterblog - Akwa Ibom Suspends Village Head Over Alleged Sponsorship of Vandalism and Intimidation at New Community Market

The Akwa Ibom State Government has announced the six-month suspension of Chief Monday Esu, the Village Head of Ikot Umo Essien, after identifying him as the prime suspect in sponsoring acts of vandalism, theft, and resident intimidation linked to the newly constructed Ikot Ekpenyong Community Market.

The government described the incidents as “acts of terrorism,” emphasizing that the decision was made to protect public safety and restore order in the affected area.

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Frank Archibong, confirmed the action in an official statement, outlining that the attacks led to the destruction of shops, a borehole, and sanitation facilities — all part of a federally funded development project intended to boost local trade and hygiene.

According to Archibong, intelligence reports traced the perpetrators to Chief Esu’s community, prompting the government’s order for him to immediately return all state-owned property in his possession pending investigation.

Online reactions to the development have been divided. Some users praised the state government for taking swift and firm action to preserve peace and accountability, arguing that local leaders must be held responsible when communities are destabilized under their watch.

Others, however, criticized the use of the term “terrorism” to describe what they see as a localized communal dispute, suggesting that the government’s framing may escalate tensions unnecessarily.

The controversy underscores the fragile balance between traditional authority and state power in Nigeria’s South-South region, where long-standing rivalries and disputes over resource control often ignite unrest.
